US Federal Government to Mandate Secure Windows

According to The Register, a new directive this week orders the federal government to only deploy Windows with certain specified security measures implemented, with the level of detail going right down to the level of specific registry settings.

Resellers and system integrators that intend to sell Windows-based solutions to the federal government will have to ensure that their solutions meet the criteria. Presumably, any digital signage networks deployed for the government will need to take this into account.

According to a quote in NetworkWorld, Karen Evans said "Common security configurations provide a baseline level of security, reduce risk from security threats and vulnerabilities, and save time and resources," referring to the government's concept of standardized security configurations for their PCs.

Perhaps this will spur on a wider adoption of locked-down systems in the private sector as well.
