Interactive content - in your food tray?

Mediox, Inc. mentions Scala in their press release discussing interactive multimedia restaurant trays.

This sounds like an interesting concept. I have a number of questions though:

  1. How is durability achieved - these will be carried, dropped, shuffled around, soiled, cleaned, and possibly stolen

  2. Won't there be food placed on top of the tray? I'm sure they account for this, and it will be fascinating to see how

  3. What OS it may be running...

  4. ... and if not Linux, how long until we see a Slashdot thread showing how someone has installed Linux on this platform

  5. Does it have WiFi capability or is all content transferred in the sync/wash cycle

I'm actually quite intrigued by the possibilities here. Let's keep an eye on this concept and see what it brings to the digital signage industry.

We are the Fast Food Nation and there is a chance that this idea has the even more potential than just advertising. They mention that the customers will be able to make purchases from their foor tray. I wonder how they are going to do that?

Did McDonalds or any other chain confirm their support for this project?

Regarding confirmed support - all the information I have right now is contained in that press release (which is not a Scala press release, but which got my attention due to the Scala mention).

I'm also keenly interested in how they might drive purchases from the tray. Perhaps a region of the tray is touch sensitive? It would either need to discriminate between intentional touch and food resting on the tray, or it would have to be physically separated from the food-bearing region somehow.

Perhaps the menu is presented on the tray and you select your food choices right on the tray interface. The restauraut could use some kind of system whereby you simply approach the counter with your tray, pay, and your order is ready faster than by ordering vocally.

There could be several problems with that approach but it's an idea of one direction they might take.
