M-Cube and Scala at Promotion Expo
Scala's latest press release,
M-Cube and Scala at Promotion Expo, relates the high level of interest in Scala InfoChannel digital signage software coupled with M-Cube's unique approach of combining visual and auditory information with olfactory stimulation... in other words, M-Cube's ability to have digital signs emit pleasing scent!
M-Cube's Trisensor page explains: "This product can stimulate all senses of the customers: sight, hearing and sense of smell, thus offering a multisensorial approach with high emotional impact."
"The psychological effects resulting from experiences involving the sense of smell are much stronger than those involving just sight and hearing, as they are remembered for longer time and in a deeper way, thus fostering the desire of buying something."
Those of us who have taken Psych 101 probably remember that our sense of smell is deeply connected with our memory. The smell of certain food cooking might instantly transport us back to a time in our childhood when our grandmother was making us a special treat for dinner.
Combining this powerful effect of scent on our emotions with the already compelling model of targeted dynamic signage, and you have an incredible tool for driving retail buying decisions.
I, for one, will be excited to see what creative applications of this concept M-Cube will be implementing.

"SED TV" - a new display technology to watch?
Although Scala is of course a pure "software only" company (we literally don't sell any hardware today and never have!), we of course keep close tabs on all the latest technologies that affect the
Digital Signage industry in which we are still the gobal software leader.
One interesting new display technology that we are watching with great interest are the the new "
SED TV" displays that Canon and Toshiba are developing jointly. Recently more details are emerging on this exciting new technology, which should give plasma and LCD flat screens some serious competition, if the technology lives up to the claims of Toshiba and Canon (both of whom are currently not strong players in the flat screen market).
SED TV promises to bring the color accuracy (e.g: black is black again!), viewing angle range and improved life expectancy of CRT's (old fashioned TV tubes!) to large format flat (thin) screens. Or as
someone recently put it "In a nutshell, SED TV has the quality of CRT (Cathode-Ray Tube) imaging without the bulk". According to recent reports these new SED TV based flat screens could be available at reasonable prices as early as
late 2006. If some of the latest
reports on SED TV are correct these new flat screens will initially be availabe in at least 55" in size, at pricing comparable to equivalent sized plasma screens.
As flat screen displays have today basically replaced CRT's as the screens of choice, especially in
Retail TV and digital signs in general, this new SED-TV technology promises to be yet another exciting element on the ever further reaching path of progress towards seeing
digitals signs everywhere in our everyday life!

Scala InfoChannel Digital Signage Helps Animal Rescue Find Homes for Katrina Victims
We're accustomed to seeing case studies about digital signage and advertising, or education, but here's a special case that illustrates a positive impact of the growing medium of narrowcasting. Vizicast Multimedia built a
digital sign network for Hopalong Animal Rescue as part of their non-profit fundraising efforts, and to help find homes for 35 orphaned animals from the Katrina disaster.
Reaction to the effort has been positive, and we're sure to see digital signage deployments put to good use in the future when a need arises.
Space constraints and infrastructure/logistics considerations can limit the utility of static posters and signage for communication in the aftermath of a disaster. Easy-to-use digital signs powered by Scala InfoChannel can present critical information in a dynamic fashion, presenting a clear advantage over the static approach.
